Web Worksheet Wizard Recipe
Go to the Web Worksheet Wizard website at http://wizard.hprtec.org/
Click on the gold arrow Let Me Get Started
There are six steps to designing and posting your very own free webpage on the Internet. You will be asked to make design and content decisions as you move through these six steps. (IMPORTANT: Your work WILL NOT be saved until step 6, so please move forward through the screens at a brisk pace. Rather than risk losing all your hard work, post as quickly as you can, knowing that you always have the option to go back in and edit to make changes).
Click on the arrow Begin at the bottom of the page to get started.
:
Point, click and enter your Name in the box.
(Mrs. Cummings or Alysa Cummings; it’s up to you. Whatever you type in the box, ends up on the webpage. So if you don’t want your students to know you have a first name, don’t type it).
Point, click and enter your E-mail address.
(Use your school email address if you have more than one)
Point, click and enter your Password.
(Use the same password that you use in other situations, otherwise you’ll forget it)
Point, click and enter your Area Code.
(Use your school area code if your home is in another locale)
Click on the Next arrow at the bottom of the page.
::
Select a Header Format (the design of the top of the webpage - the title of your webpage, i.e., Mrs. Cummings’ Grade Three Class, a subtitle, i.e., Room 12, and one graphic image) by clicking in the radio button underneath one of the three layout choices.
Select a Body Format (the design of the body of the webpage that depicts text and active links to Internet websites). Your choices are either right/left, left/right or top/bottom. Click in the radio button under the layout choice that most appeals to you.
Click Next at the bottom of the page.
(IMPORTANT: do not choose preview or back until you become more experienced since it is easy to inadvertently close out the entire site which means your unsaved work is lost)
:::
Now it’s time to add some content to your webpage.
Point and click and type in your Page Heading (this is the title of your webpage; i.e., Mrs. Cummings’ Virtual Classroom).
Point and click and type in your Page Subheading (optional but many teachers either use this space for Welcome to Room 10 or a motto like, A friendly place to learn and grow)
Point and click and type in your Body Text.
Even though the box appears small, there is enough space to hold 4 ½ pages of text. Consider using this space for up to the minute announcements for students and parents, upcoming events and/or reminders of due dates. It can also provide directions on how to utilize the active links that you are putting on the page. (for example, if you post a link to Yahooligans, explain how it could be a useful homework helper website)
Click Next at the bottom of the page.
(IMPORTANT REMINDER: do not choose Preview or Back until you become a more experienced webmistress/webmaster since it is easy to inadvertently close out the entire site which means your unsaved work will be lost)
::::
There is room for 16 active links. This means you can post websites that you want your students to visit for instructional purposes outside of school.
Where it says Link, type the name of the website (Yahooligans) or a descriptive phrase that explains what you want the students or their parents to do at the website (Practice your spelling skills here).
Where it says URL (that is techno-speak for Uniform Resource Locator but all it means is the Internet address) type (or copy and paste) the Internet address for the website. Do this carefully since an extra space or a typo will keep the site from clicking through.
Repeat this process for as many active links as you choose, up to a max of 16 in number, that you want to include on your webpage.
To add a graphic image to your page (seasonal clip art or a class photo or a portrait of the teacher) click on the browse tool and indicate where that file is by clicking thorough until the file is selected. In the text box you will now see the path to that image. There is room for one jpg. image only.
A caption image (words to go underneath the graphic) is an option. It is also a place to give credit to whoever created that particular image to honor copyright.
Click Next to continue.
:::::
For this screen your goal is to make design choices that will impact your font type, style and color as well as the color of the webpage background.
For Fonts, your size and style choices are right there for you to consider.
Use the drop down menu to make a selection of size (from 0-7) and font type (nine different fonts to choose from).
For font and background color, either click in the radio button on the chart that corresponds to your choice for background, text, link unvisited, link visited or use the Preset Color Scheme method. Select a background color and then click the apply scheme button to activate a ready made selection of colors for your page.
Click Next to move forward to the next screen.
::::::
Congratulations! This is step six and the finish line (literally) is in sight!
Where it says Worksheet Title, the name of your webpage should appear without your needing to type anything.
Where it says Subject, use the drop down menu to select a topic that is a subject heading (i.e., language arts) for your page.
Where it says Grade level, use the drop down menu to select either Primary or Intermediate.
Where it says Description, write one simple declarative sentence explaining the purpose of your webpage. (i.e., This is a class webpage for third graders and their parents).
Click on Finish and take a minute to pat yourself on the back. You have now created and posted your first webpage to the Internet.
:::::::
Your screen should now read:
